Goodbye Yahoo.

The first few years were good ones. I miss that Yahoo. I don't miss what you have become.

Student Loans - OMG

I've just received an envelope from Nelnet - my student loan administrator. They want thousands of dollars every month starting September. Someone is out of their minds.

I didn't finish the Spring semester and did not start Summer because of health issues. I thought I had handled everything with my advisor but apparently not. I do plan on returning to class soon, but since I switched programs and started paying out of pocket for each class things are progressing very slowly. If the health issues flare up again it would be hard to make sure I stay enrolled at least half time, which is necessary to delay loan repayment.

Maybe I would be better off consolidating the loans and start making payments on them now so that if I can't meet the enrollment requirements things will already be handled? I think I will call Nelnet and the financial aid department to see if they both give out the same information and or recommendations.

I was a lot more trusting back in the day; I think I would do a much better job of investigation the long term issues and potential consequences now. Of course I would not be able to think that if I hadn't had the experiences over the last few years. Hindsight - its a wonderful thing.

The Thumper rule or the lack of constructive criticism in fan fiction

There is a distinct lack of constructive criticism in fan fiction. I've read enough complaints recently to know I'm not the only who has noticed this.

The problem is that most people who are capable of intelligently dissecting a story are not willing or able to hurt feelings.

I admit to being part of the problem, I just don't have a solution.

Beta request - oh boy

I was really surprised to get a beta request for The Mentalist. I don't follow the show. The writer told me that my lack of interest in the show was one of the reasons she wanted me to beta the story for her. Collapse )

On the other hand she did decide that I would not be the right person to beta her work. And she'll probably start talking to me again in a week or two.

Incest in fic

A friend recently (at lunch) went off about an author, of a story she was reading, who didn't warn for incest. (Based on the number and types of other warnings the author did supply, I'm sure that lack was an accident.)

Is there a right or wrong here, or do we both need an attitude adjustment?
